Similar calculation I did recently:

When I studied dentistry from 2001-2007 one could get ca. 520 EUR (Bafög) from the state to finance your student life. (In some East German cities enough to cover living costs back then).

Measured in gold, back then, this equated to 2oz of gold.

As a full-time employed (dentist) with 17 years experience it would earn you a net-income of ca. 4000 EUR (after taxes & other fees).

In today's gold price (2150€/oz) it would pay you less in gold to work compared to Bafög when you studied. 👀
