I just checked one of my #btc addresses. there's a transaction I did a while ago that has over 53000 confirmations.
is it just me or does that seem excessive?
isn't there overhead for all those confirmations?

I don't think confirmations are actually recorded on the Blockchain. It's just the number of blocks since your transaction was recorded and it's calculated by the block explorer. Simple subtraction, no overhead.
That just means there are 53000 blocks after the block where your transaction was first confirmed.
