I have a plan to set my stereo homepods on a wifi network that doesn't have internet access just to keep the stereo over wifi. I'm going to stream to them via airplay from the iPod, but Siri won't be able to transfer data over the internet.

Why not just get some Bluetooth speakers? Can prob find better/louder for the same price or cheaper…
Of course bluetooth would work too, I agree. I bought homepods because I'm an apple collector and I like using their products. I would also like to buy an iPod HiFi. The second argument is that the homepods are just big for my small desk. The third argument is that via wifi you can stream music from NAS storage with better quality than via bluetooth. I use homepods on wifi with internet now and I use Siri only for “Hey Siri, play radio”. I don't like Siri to much, but I like Apple ecosystem across the product.
