I don't know. For that they would have to run monthly costs right?
the ones I joined were 1 time fees. But they might switch it up if costs are getting too high.
Can’t imagine those are high as of now, basically a Raspberry Pi with an SD and an internet connection you pay for anyway.
We'll probably see premium paid relay subscriptions in the future.
The business model is a little awkward, you basically pay for censorship on a censorship-resistent network 😂

How does such a private relay work? Like running your own relay with tools to filter?
It's just to ensure that everyone using that relay has put up the necessary collateral to post on it. So there's some kind of cost incurred for spammers. You can still spam, but it will cost you. Hence it's not censorship. It's business.
What i mean with private is that you have to pay to get access.
Somebody has to pay for the servers. If that is not you, well you could become the product.
Ah, yes I get it now, but that would mean all the peers you care about would need to be on the same relay, and you would need to cut yourself from non-paid relays, basically cutting you off from the rest of Nostr.
Yeah it could cause fragmentation, but if you're on several payed relays you maintain the censorship resistance, while avoiding spam.
Free relays are working also to mitigate spam so payed may not be the only answer.
Time will tell.
But paying for nostr > netflix.
Especially since you can pay with sats.
For now I am using both payed and non-paid.
