Is it time to delete NIP 04 from Amethyst? You won't be able to see any of the past DMs.
Why not keep read only support?

Because then people will keep receiving and will not be able to reply
Isn't that still better than nothing? The message should be: "Tell your contacts to use a client with NIP-17 support" instead of simply showing nothing, as if something is broken or #Amethyst doesn't work.
