I have for a long time but there are no jobs that let you pay for a simple life in slow areas. For most people, you have to save up in a fast area and outright retire somewhere slow to achieve that.

That's not exactly true, though, it can help to have a skill that's useful anywhere. I'm a welder. I can literally work anywhere on the planet that there's electricity or access to compressed gasses. And that's really most of the globe these days.
Yeah the key is having a widely needed skill. I’m in a highly skilled sector that only exists in 2-3 notoriously high cost metros, with zero chance of remote. I currently love my work but know it is unlikely to last forever. Always keeping my eye open for when I can start fresh with my savings somewhere cheaper, but that gets harder as I get older.
Do it before you get old. I'm on thy cusp of that and feel the resistance growing every day... But I fight it because I'm less happy where I am now and just want to build a cozy home in the woods.
I got a remote job. Started in the city with city wages & a city house. Sold the house & got a remote job to move to the country. It can still be done, but you have to be strategic.
