Those are tatarian honeysuckle?

If so, its toxic as many plants are but wont kill you. Shits for sure. Prob vomit.

“Edible” is a spectrum

My point is only that there’s usually only a small number of plants you need to really memorize to NEVER eat and most of them are

Obvious Like Hemlock & foxglove etc

Just memorize the toxic nightshade berries and mushrooms you need to avoid and you’re pretty safe eating a little, waiting an hour before eating a bit more.

I could go on to add a ton of nuance but I made my point

This is only the advice Id give a fellow soldier in a survival situation… but its done me well over the years.

Appreciate the insight my guy! I like your methodology and will definitely look into memorizing the NEVER eats!!

Do please look at this article that my wife forwarded me because I agree that the one’s we picked and ate are not of the honeysuckle family and are in fact Autumn Olives! At least I didn’t die I guess :)

I dig that authors perspective. I'm much further south in Colorado most if the time and have not come across that variety yet but I'm sure I'll see it everywhere now. or I have and didn't pay it anyattention.

anyway

I have dozen's of old books that say something is "undesirable" rather than toxic. heating things up, neutralizes many of the enzyms that the plant uses to stop foragers from snacking on it. I imagine it's safer to just say its poisonous. cashews for example. raw is definitely not edible. blanch them and your good to go.
