Naaaah.

It’s like saying that paying for ads on a billboard or on internet is a desperate move.

Marketing is needed to bootstrap a bit of adoption and create some network effect in a meaningful amount of time.

What reeks of desperation is conning people into exchanging an email address or phone number for a discount code rendered all but worthless by a foot-long list of exclusions; serving ads to premium subscribers; wasting the scarce time of both shoppers and cashiers with paper coupons that could've been easily credited to that stupid rewards card; demanding shoppers recite their phone number within earshot of half the damn store 🤬
