BlueSky reminds me of those old Byzantine consensus models that failed before proof-of-work came along. History, but useless nowadays in terms of costly-to-attack trust minimization.
Discussion
I think ultimately the goals of the people building BlueSky do not align with those of Nostr. The userbase and tone over there reflects this.
BlueSky is Mastodon 2.0.
Nostr is something actually new. It may not know what exactly it is yet, but it's not an improved anything. It's ultimately a new thing.
Agreed… Although, the “default relays” set by apps like Damus is a similar problem #nostr suffers from.
nostr has a very few big relays and some of the clients are “centralised” in the backend.
Understandable at this stage of the ecosystem development but it can tilt the direction as the path of least resistance.
Gotta start somewhere, yup. But there is huge room for improvement and no one has suggested anything to address this bootstrapping problem.
I’m tempted to release our answer to this Relay Discovery Problem once our merkle tree storage system is ready to deploy.
I was going to wait until we coded everything, but maybe the new merkle trees will be enough to encourage everyone to help us code the rest.
