I mean they did kind of invent most of them (paid staff wrote most specs)

Most web protocols were created by big corporations that are just "nice enough" to license (or lease) their to us. As you are writing this likely from a proprietary network stack or even CPU and microcode.

i remember reading articles years ago (in my early teens) about the debate around platforms vs protocols, it's nothing new
