TL : DR

We can analysts each pubkey’s pattern to do detection they definitely have some abnormal pattern

But this should be a third party service. Too heavy for clients

I'm going to start with WoT but a paid service like you're describing would be great. It could be as simple as a relay that serves 1984 events based in its analysis.

Reply spam can be dealt with by using special subscriptions on the reply feed of each note:

- from any relay: query replies by people you follow only

- from paid relays: anything

- from relays that have antispam mechanism built-in (e.g. powrelay.xyz only has notes with some proof-of-work, nostr.zbd.gg only has notes from registered ZBD users etc): anything

- from any relay: query only notes with id starting with 0000 or something like that

What do you think?

(The first and last are duplicated )

BTW do we have a relay metadata now? So it will be easy to know which is anti spam relay etc

In this video, James Lopp talks about the proof-of-work system hashcash for preventing spam “… the learning lesson you can take from email is that it is possible for a protocol to work for decades but then it encountered stressors which was mass adoption by tens of millions of people…And it didn’t have to be that way, now there was this guy in 1997 who proposed something called hashcash…Adam Back realized that the problem of email spam… could be solved by economics.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashcash Mark 31:31 of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEm3NKNAATA&t=1889s

Just listened to this the other day! Really helpful and relevant.

A simple way to integrate it could be:

- replies from accounts you directly follow -> always show

- replies from others -> configurable PoW requirement

More advanced things (WoT, 2nd / 3rd degree follows, etc) need extra queries or special logic on the relay.

"configurable PoW requirement" = a config in the web client: only show notes from strangers with at least X bits of PoW

Agreed, this wouldn't be a hard place to start

good idea

I don't see a problem. Obviously I'm missing something. I only see people I follow. If they turn out to be spammers. I just mute and blocked them. If there's a big spammer in my global feed I just blocked them too.

I could see how it could be a problem for relays. Bandwidth in space.

wait does web of trust means, only show within N layers of contacts in global feed/reply etc?
