What the heel did it burn down or something? Who would possibly make the decision to *pay* to remove the original and have a literal square box built in its place?

Like many buildings from that age, I expect it got taken down due to high maintenance costs

They’re one and the same, it just depends what they want to tell you. High maintenance costs can also mean “we don’t want to pay for it” instead of “we can’t afford it”
