If I had to guess I'd say everything they did was what they wanted & they didn't give AF about what was expected.

This is exactly right. While there were still some social courtesies that needed heeding, they really didn’t give a sh*t about the traditional wedding checklists . An example would be that they cancelled the videographer - realizing that it’s dollar bills flying out the window just to have a camera in your face all day for a 5 minute video they probably wouldn’t watch more than one time.
