Some people joined the field because they are into this sort of thing and good at it. Some people just because they heard it pays well. You can tell the difference in the quality of their work.

Agreed on all points. Personally, I have several certifications. I also have many years of practical experience in business and hacking.
The corporate world, at least today, does not want someone with street credentials, they prefer someone with a college degree, Linkedin profile, certifications, and a willingness to be told how to act and what to think.
However, using the corporate world as a stepping stone for connections, networking and a learning experience is great. Especially is someone wants to eventually become an entrepreneur.
