Help! Guys... I've not really used nostr since I set it up months ago but I've decided to give it a go now that the censorship industrial complex is in full swing.

Today I have been figuring it out and having a look around and it has me worried.

You are literally only two clicks away from seeing child porn on this protocol from the #bitcoin

I have never been so shocked and horrified to have stumbled upon content on the internet like that..

I have reported the accounts in question but the fact there was 100s of followers on these accounts and has been active for 3 months has me concerned.

How do make sure that if I'm using nostr I don't happen upon these sort of images? and is there anything that can be done to remove or block those sort of images?

I would post the usernames of the user's in question but I don't want to draw any traffic to these sick fucks.

Yeah.

It’s a vulnerability in the whole social network.

Three letter agencies / other social media companies scared of loosing users and thus advertising revenue, flood the competitions space using anon accounts with objectionable materials.

Then complain that there’s no content moderation, and government should regulate.

Governments kill the competition, and the social media companies and governments agencies behind it, suck up user data like normal and profit.

Circles of friends is definitely a way to mitigate it, but I do think we need some sort of shared block lists that people can opt into to completely filter that content.

Basically if multiple people report it, it makes it onto a temp blacklist, then setup an AI to scan the reported post and set a rating. With an appeal process through each relay running the lists.

We have to have some mechanism to keep this illegal content off the network.

I think multiple reports from multiple separate people, should trigger AI review and if found to be illegal, blacklist the key completely on that relay. Then, if the AI made a mistake, and IF people are deliberately abusing the system, and targeting users to get them blacklisted. The user can flag an appeal to the relay operators.

Just my 2c on how to get ahead of the incoming inevitable spam & nastiness.

Got to program our way out… need to build build build.

Opt-in shared block list is an excellent idea

I just mute the people posting things I don’t wanna see. My feed has been completely clear of that type of stuff with just a few mutes.

There are a few things you can do to limit, but not assure exposure. A couple of relays should be taken off your relay lists. You can block certain words and hashtags commonly used.

This is the real world and the real internet where you are your own censor and responsible for your own feed. That is possibly more shocking than the content you give objectionable.

We can help you get to a good place with your feed. It took me a while, but, gosh, I love it now.

Of course. Content on the internet is just a reflection of the people in this world... The surprise came more from how easily I stumbled upon it.

What relays should be removed?

I pretty much never go to the Global feed, not sure how you stumbled upon this but that may help. I think the relay advice is the best bet tho. I'm not good with stuff like that so hopefully someone gets back to you.

(As an aside this was one scenario I was thinking of that happens on nostr when I said I think nostr really isn't suitable for children.)

Off the top of my head, the mostr bridge.

I'd have to dig around for more.

When I come across a nasty note in a thread I mute that user, though I've only done that a few times.

There's a quote that I like about free speech that I'll paraphrase - Free speech is horrible, but it's better than the alternative.

No doubt there is terrible stuff on here, and as Nostr gets more popular there will be even more (whether genuinely horrific people or just trolls trying to give Nostr a bad name). nostr:npub1q6ya7kz84rfnw6yjmg5kyttuplwpauv43a9ug3cajztx4g0v48eqhtt3sh 's suggestions about relays and words/hashtags are great, and there will surely be more options to curate your own algorithm over time.

Welcome (back)!

I saw that you were back and reacted before I read the rest of it 😭🫂 I use Amethyst and p much never go to Global. But even if I do, I dont see what most people describe so maybe check my relays and copy them and try Amethyst!

That’s insane and sad that you experienced this. I’m just a simple user and don’t know too much about how Nostr works, but I’ve been active here for quite a while. I’ve actually never encountered that kind of content on my feed, but I also never go to the global feed at all. Maybe a quick tip I can offer is to check out my relays and follow them, as I’ve never seen content like that. Good luck, and I hope your Nostr experience improves 🌹

I never go global for this reason
