What would make for a healthier social network? I’m thinking the ideal network would connect you to people irl.

Less addictive is a huge plus but nothing beats making friends 🤷‍♂️

You probably also don’t want to absorb the entire world’s news. Maybe it gets you involved in the local community more (meetups)

Seems like nostr is well positioned to transform social media to social networking - the way it was intended to be.

social network that increases irl retention

That sounds real

Yes!

I wonder what would happen if you got rid of likes, follower counts. Focus on conversation and let good comments (anon ranked) be the measure of quality notes 🧐

You rate a note or reply but nobody sees the overall rating.

we all become the shadowbanners

Feels like it could have the unintended consequence of removing the feedback loop that lets people know what is socially acceptable/desirable.

But maybe not.

What if you just said “top note”

Idk. That sounds like “like” with more taps. Not trying to be an ass. Just trying to think this through.

I guess there’s a difference possibly in what’s healthy, and what is going to be broadly popular? Low effort interaction is kinda the appeal of social media broadly speaking.

I can imagine a "like" as a nod in a conversation irl.

On amethyst I use them to send love, wonder and hugs. 🫂

There should be a separation between what NIPs came as a way to "clone" Twitter and what came as a sincere need to interact with others.

We should probably look at the discussion for every NIP and see what really matters.

IRL eh hmm. They better b at the beach cuz I go beach to screen to dogs to silver store to bullbitcoinay post office and back. Tight loop

So like the Orange Pill App + nostr.

Japanese Nostr does that - there have been many off-meetings & meetups.

It feels like a nice cosy community.

Yeah, their style is too have someone you follow have a train of thought and emotions directly in the feed, almost no replies used.

It''s kinda unique to me, but it sure feels human, like hearing someone on the street while walking around.

Huh. YouTube was ranked by… some people as being the least “toxic”. Seems like most of the problems with social media are with how people use them.

Someone could write a bot for Nostr that gives people hints on what they could change to meet whatever their goal is. Let’s say their goal is to be X% positive in their replies.

Or it could say “hey, you follow a lot of people who post things that often cause people to ____, consider unfollowing ____ today”

I think the Fediverse already shows that non-algorithmic social media has a massive effect on behaviour. A lot less drama and bs there. Humans are basically decent when you don’t deliberately try and set them off against each other but the platform isn’t perfect (still a massive improvement). Let’s see what happens here.
