I build up from 1 navy seal burpee every day to 40 by increments of 1 every week over the course of 40 weeks and i can say that yes, this is the way.
I am now (2 years later) still doing 30 every day on the days that i do not do any upper body workout. 40 just took quite a chunk of time (around 15-20 minutes almost).
