Replace *reason* with *discussion & speech* and it's still true, & also more clearly relevant to what's going on today. The pro "science" crowd tends to think reason is on their side, but free & open discussion is how reason is demonstrated & they want to prevent that because on some level they are aware of the weakness of their position.
