I don't think I like being a software engineer anymore.

Watching people of a different generation getting excited about a "problem space" as boring as market analysis, SEO, or CRM...

Watching them use AI to whip out code in a fifth of the time it would have taken them to hand code it, yet soaking in the same amount of dopamine...

Watching them enthusiastically spend their evenings busting their ass to hit code complete...

It's so tiresome. I can't pretend to care.

I was thinking about this concept of “engineer” today. What makes an engineer. Is it the degree or the mindset of how to think? 🤔

It starts as a mindset, and then comes the midlife apathy. You get tired of watching the same ideas turn into the same mistakes. You start pounding the table about maintainability and just want them to stop bloating the dependency tree on frivolous shit, like saving a few keystrokes per test.

You wish you would have taken some hobbies more seriously, but you realize mastery would be impossible, given how much otherwise spare time was spent working.
