Hard to prove a negative. So no one can say he DOESN'T hold real bitcoins... But most likely he uses a custodian. Which, as someone mentioned, is probably safer for the amounts he's holding. But I wouldn't want to let someone else hold my keys.
We can't prove it either way, so what are you criticizing him for ?
Since he said he was going to die with this personal keys, I give him the benefit of the doubt until I see some kind of proof and find some reason how it is any of my business.
