New rule: if you have a hard shell suitcase, you need to check it in. The entire point of these annoying things is that they can survive the airplane hold and ground crew tosses.

As hand luggage they are ridiculously space inefficient and make boarding take twice as long as needed. Just don't do it.

These things never fit, so people start fumbling around for several minutes and then they need to go further to the back of the plane to find a free spot. And they often have to go in landscape mode and can't be turned on their side either. So one such suitcase takes the overhead bin space of two or three large backpacks.

It's less of a problem in the old 747 planes with plenty overhead space.
