Yeah, theye seem to spray the ginger with something to stop sprouting. We got turmeric though.

Good call on growing turmeric! I had success with sprouting (unintentionally) and planting store bought ginger last year but also picked up some stock (shell ginger) from a local grower this year. You can steep the leaves to make ginger tea with a milder ginger flavor.
We're going to get some of the fancy organic ginger from another store and try again.
