Read it to my wife last night. Interesting, enjoyed it. It makes me feel like there's something more here than I'm missing though, some sort of metaphor? Or is it just for fun in its own right?

Not answering your question, but the episode in a way reminds me of chapter VII of The Wind in the Willows: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
