Messaging is broken.

Signal is centralized.

SimpleX doesn't do groups well.

Session doesn't auto-rotate keys.

XMPP lacks multi-device support.

And Matrix leaks metadata & is slow.

Nostr DMs are currently horrible. But White Noise looks like a promising potential upcoming solution to all of these problems. It uses MLS for the actual encryption with Nostr keys just for identity.

MLS is able to offer easy scaling for groups, that isn't bogged down by being a bunch of one-on-ones in disguise as a group UI, the way signal, session, and simplex are. Check out, https://www.whitenoise.chat/

Another promosing one is nostr:npub1h0uj825jgcr9lzxyp37ehasuenq070707pj63je07n8mkcsg3u0qnsrwx8 here's how they differ:

What issues do you have with simplex and groups? I run a server/relay instance and my family uses it. Not often, but enough. No real issues. Other than notifications work only if you want your battery to go to 0. Lol

Messages can arrive out of order in large groups (1000+) especially if you only connect over tor like i do. They are adding super peers to reduce this but its not live yet

Ah, got it. Thanks!

Once groups get large enough you begin to have significant message delivery issues. Chat becomes schizophrenic.

What are your thoughts on the SimpleX super peer system to make groups work better without centralizing things?

How's your comfort with inputting your nsec into the app?

I don't use nostr on mobile, which is what this is right now. In future, hope it progresses

Hey Shadow why do you say XMPP lacks multi-device support?

After reading Whitenoise's blurbs, it sounds like a malicious relay could undo all the security.

After listening to their nostr:nprofile1qqs874el2hv8tn5wm3fgahuz99yl624el8r9my22gq39vcas56tmupcprdmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujucnfw33k76twwpshy6ewvdhk6qgewaehxw309aek2mnyd96zumn0wdnxcctjv5hxxmmdqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2aqzqdljd episode, it seems like that is not the case. All the data is fully encrypted when it hits the relays, nothing they can do to harm the security. That's my take at least. But I'm an idiot, 😂

Okay, that sounds good then.

not sure yet, I would need to read more

This is pretty fantastic. I'm going to keep my eye on this, I doubt I'll begin using it right now (need remote signing using Amber or something like it) but very promising looking. If it matures just a little more I might make it my default comm online.

cool always open for new stuff

i go with simplex for now

white noise seems to have a pubkey

istnt that like a identity ?

...But Nostr doesn't auto-rotate keys either?

True, it's an issue with it as a social media. But some of the messengers for mobile use it for identity, but then do double-ratchet for the actual messages 1-on-1
