This is one of those 80s American Christmas photos going around. I was a kid. I remember. Rampant consumerism, yes, but it was glorious.

The last time I saw a mall decorated like this for Christmas was in Tangier, Morocco, Christmas of '21. They still do it.

The slow, quiet rot of fiat.

My sister in law showed me photos of her local mall, completely empty apart from one coffee shop, all tenants either gone into liquidation or left before they did

I'd be a hypocrite to complain because I use Amazon, but it's a sad thing.

Worth a watch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper_Mall_(film)

Unrelated but chatting to a business owner today, he said we dont employ anyone under 30 because they're constantly on their phones

That's not a criticism of young people from me, that's just the way things are now

Took the family to a local Christmas event at a large hotel. Lined up for a ride and watched an ~8 year old girl on her own phone beside her mom. Both on Tiktok.

That's just the way things are now

Personally I think teachers are cooked, their days are numbered, with personalised one 2 one or group AI tuition

Alright. There's a lot of slop atm but that will tighten up

#homeschool is the only way.

Never liked malls but even I feel nostalgic looking at this.

The problem is less so fiat in this case and more the import of a hundred million third worlders into the United States.

Our culture and society is changing so fast…it’s kinda crazy to reflect on what we had

And where in all of this was He, The Lord, Jesus Christ?

In the lower left corner, just off of the escalator.

I get your point... but even then, there was more of HIM back then. Although if you really wanted to celebrate his birth, the holiday would be in the spring, you know... when the lambs were giving birth and the shepherds were tending the flocks.

That surreptitious takeover of winter solstice.
