LTE direct was supposed to be the answer for ad-hoc mobile mesh networking but cellular network operators were not keen and discouraged handset makers from including it.

We have another chance now with 5G Sidelink (NR-PC5). Perhaps if Bitchat demand ramps up fast people will want to pay a premium for handsets with it.
