when you have a default reference implementation of Bitcoin

is actually blanket vote for Core to do whatever they want.

Having just one reference implementation of Bitcoin is a weak link that has worked up until now because trust was upheld.

When the social contract (not respecting the Bitcoin community's wishes) is broken this is no longer the case.

Multiple competing implementations has always been inevitable. It was the solution to "but who controls the software that controls Bitcoin?"

Up until now, a clear necessity for that solution had mostly only been theoretical.... but here we are.
