It’s a serious pet peeve of mine when folks from the global north scream out “this is so cheap” or “it’s only …” in the global south. Not only is it rude, it feels like you’re mocking the poor, and begging natives to gringo tax you.
As someone who’s trying to move to a place that’s safe to raise kids — early comers are creating a vibe that’s making it easy for people like me to be exploited.
The real estate agents are asking American prices for property w/o offering American conveniences (strong power grid, drinkable tap water, natural gas pipelines, hot water, trash pickup, etc) and I’ve been told it’s because of the global north. Folks come here and make the local businesses feel inferior and therefore they charge us knowing we have the money to pay it. I’ve even been denied opportunities because I’m ‘negra’ and they don’t want to work with me … wonder where they got that from???
I moved here to live a simpler life and have healthy kids because black women are dying from childbirth in the states. Don’t get me wrong the locals that can’t afford the high end resorts and restaurants are AWESOME and I don’t wanna go back to the states. It’s just irritating that privilege seems to travel and it’s destructive to a good thing.
Like my momma always said, humble yourself and act like you think you have sense.
