It’s a serious pet peeve of mine when folks from the global north scream out “this is so cheap” or “it’s only …” in the global south. Not only is it rude, it feels like you’re mocking the poor, and begging natives to gringo tax you.

As someone who’s trying to move to a place that’s safe to raise kids — early comers are creating a vibe that’s making it easy for people like me to be exploited.

The real estate agents are asking American prices for property w/o offering American conveniences (strong power grid, drinkable tap water, natural gas pipelines, hot water, trash pickup, etc) and I’ve been told it’s because of the global north. Folks come here and make the local businesses feel inferior and therefore they charge us knowing we have the money to pay it. I’ve even been denied opportunities because I’m ‘negra’ and they don’t want to work with me … wonder where they got that from???

I moved here to live a simpler life and have healthy kids because black women are dying from childbirth in the states. Don’t get me wrong the locals that can’t afford the high end resorts and restaurants are AWESOME and I don’t wanna go back to the states. It’s just irritating that privilege seems to travel and it’s destructive to a good thing.

Like my momma always said, humble yourself and act like you think you have sense.

Well said.

I couldn’t believe the the cost of some of the real estate in El Salvador. Not even the nice plots.

That’s what I’m dealing with rn!! I own property in the US and it’s unbelievable how they compare. I’ve been told this is the time of year that price gauging is most prevalent because foreigners come here and have Christmas money to blow and they end up bailing come March.

its been expensive since they adopted btc. literally went from cheap to expensive in a few months. my guess is it stays that way…at least until some other paradise adopts btc or legalizes btc as currency….but probably price isn’t going down anytime soon. maybe find some non-bitcoin, non-price gougers folks…do your own scouting.

Oohhh, that makes sense. The Bitcoin infrastructure isn’t super strong yet so it seems like they’re literally riding the wave of bitcoiners = dumb & wealthy. I’ve been working with some people who aren’t necessarily bitcoiners they’ve been explaining the price uptick because they’re shocked themselves. It’s crazy how the banks/credit unions and car companies have been asking that the BTC gets converted so I can write a fiat check… which feels so wrong.

El Salvador is still a dollar economy. Cash could get the prices down. no shame is using dollars to get a better price for you and your family

I think the shame comes from knowing that Bitcoin is an asset that’s more valuable than any home I could purchase so converting it for fiat that’s depreciating feels unwise. It’s especially disheartening knowing that this country is on a Bitcoin standard and they don’t understand what’s they’re asking. It feels irresponsible spending Bitcoin on over priced real estate. Idk …

rent a hut for a year out in wild east for cheap and just stack sats

That’s a great plan!!

Welp not surprised! El Salvador is not some paradise exploits will continue to happen and so will racism part of life

Doesn’t have to be. I think people have a responsibility to reflect the changes they want to see.

I moved to the Japanese country side about 18 years ago for the same reason of it's a beautiful place to raise a family. At work I earn probably as much as I did in high school and I feel fortunate that the land is so cheap. When I went to nostrasia the people I met were not privileged but highly skilled individuals from all races.

Sorry to hear about your experience, maybe the barrier to get to Japan keeps many out or they are all located in Tokyo where it is expensive.

So true. I thought about Okinawa but it’s so far and although I’m not super worried about familial ties it was a barrier that kept me from moving there. I’m hoping there’s some sort of Nostrador coming here considering the halving is coming up… hopefully I’ll meet some like minded people but idk the bitcoiner group

I joined via FB acts like embracing me will bring down the neighborhood 🤣
