The band was scheduled to perform their hit single “Light My Fire.” However, the producers requested that Morrison change the lyric “girl, we couldn’t get much higher” to something less suggestive. Morrison agreed but ultimately sang the original lyrics during the live broadcast, resulting in backlash from the show’s producers.

Morrison’s defiance made headlines and symbolized the rebellious spirit of The Doors and the counterculture movement. The performance was intense and captivating, and Morrison’s refusal to conform to the network’s demands became a defining moment in his career. Following the incident, The Doors were banned from performing on The Ed Sullivan Show again, but the performance left an indelible mark on pop culture.

For Jim Morrison, the Ed Sullivan performance solidified his reputation as a rebellious icon unafraid to challenge authority. His defiance resonated with young fans and underscored his commitment to artistic authenticity. The incident remains one of the most memorable moments in rock history, exemplifying Morrison’s status as a symbol of nonconformity.

Years later the band disgraced themselves with their covid policies but their music will always live past their cowardice

Yes absolutely 💯. I have had to make a very conscious choice to separate musicians political stances from their music. And actors from their films etc Neil Young Bruce Springsteen et al... Love the music 🎶...have to forgive their mistakes. 🧡
