Half a league, half a league,

Half a league onward,

All in the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!

Charge for the guns!” he said.

Into the valley of Death

Rode the six hundred.

Theirs not to make reply,

Theirs but to do and die…

I recall a government school English class years ago in which this poem was assigned for recitation and discussion. Recall the lines

“Theirs not to make reply,

“Theirs not to reason why,

“Theirs nut to do and die.”

My comment when called upon to speak was that the poem was crap (being too young to realize that ‘bullshit’ is a much better word) and that it would have been better if someone had shot the guy who have the order to charge.

I was told I had a very bad attitude and if it continued I would be suspended. I was too young to seize the opportunity, but at least I was thinking clearly.

F the State!

gave the order - not have the order. I’m a lousy typist.

You had a shitty teacher, like I did.

The point I take away now, isnt to 'like' the idea of blind obedience, but to imagine how fucking glorious it could feel, in line of battle, relieved of your judgement, set to glory.

and of course, “Hell is truth seen too late.”

It's a tragic poem,

Excellent insight and a compelling perspective I had not considered. Memorable (and useful) quote as well. Thank you.
