If that existed, would it be possible to streamline the process such that people could just click a link and immediately get a client configured to publish to that relay and the relay automatically knew who that person was?
Not pay up front means pay later? I don't see how nostr works without paid relays. If users don't pay, eventually they will need ads and other revenue streams or they will be unsustainable.
Reddit-like community solutions could also be envisioned, where you can join a relay and read/like/boost but not write unless you wait x days (anti spam) or pay a quick access fee.
At least people have access to quality content and load speeds from the get go, which helps attract new people. Paid 'members' could also have additional privileges in that specific client/relay

Could the wss: uri contain a signed and revocable authorization (e.g. wss://relay.emptybags.io?auth=abcd...zxy) that could be given away by existing members of a relay on a promotional basis but could be purchased on a subscription basis (perhaps through zaps to the relay?)
Interesting, an old local forum used to have a rank in wich newcomers have restricted certain actions untill their posts get more than X number of points, then they will be granted the status of "New Full User", maybe this can be done with zaps instead?
You could post but not invite untill you have gained that status providing enough value in the eyes of the existing full members, I don't think that a time barrier can do that trick in the same way spending sats would but that is my intuition for now.
The more options and ideas, the better! Let's try them all and see what works ☺️
I think we should have 'mother of relay' which can boardcast messages between Her children(delay), every relay have one mother and one father， the ''father of relay' which can check relay's health to protect Nostr network.
