Value for value shouldn't be relied on exclusively, but as an extra revenue stream IMO. It's just providing content creators with an easier and more direct way to receive money from fans and not just get shafted by the likes of YouTube and Spotify. That's still a win in my book!
That has already been possible for a while with things like Patreon

Isn't patreon a subscription model and not pay as you go? Never really looked into it
I thought it supports both but I could be wrong. Buymeacoffee gumroad are a few others
