I called out someone on a twitter space earlier for using “his mom” as a foil for a non-technical person who might struggle to understand self custody

this is something I’ve thought about quite a bit — i wrote up some longer thoughts on the overusage of “mom” as a know-nothing tech person 6y ago

tldr: i understand why it’s something people reach for natively but im not sure it’s a good idea to keep casting implicit shade on mother’s capacity for understanding (even if in your case, it’s a true statement)

i feel guilty now because i did this recently, but i was just speaking from my experience. my dad knows computers, my mom doesn't. Maybe the kids who all grew up with phones in their hands will change this. I grew up without internet, so we are the last wave.

it’s lindy for a reason, it probably won’t ever change 😂

My mom loves it, she's like I know you'll talk about me in any podcast you do

wow what a cool mom. i’d bet everyone who does it’s mom is proud of them

People can use whatever reference best suits their personal circumstances.

Absolutely no one is using the term 'mom' as an intentionally derogatory placeholder for the technologically illiterate - certainly not outside of their own life experiences.

I'm so sick of people like you trying to manage the speech of others. GFY.

my mother has been managing her own linux installation for a decade

i taught her... she's a really smart lady my mother, DIY mindset, in her teens and 20s was into the whole "self sufficiency" trip that was the thing in the 70s

i'd also go further than my hypocrisy comment above to also point out that most people are too busy being puppeteered by the system to have the time to learn anything and words like "my mom" and "normies" exist because it's not just a generalization it's the fucking reality, you have to go in with that expectation and occasionally you will be surprised but rarely, one in 10 or less

if you’re so tired of it, why you doing it??

Oh you are flipping to being victim are you?

Give me a break.

I pointed out your behavior mimics the very thing that i did that disgusted you

ngl the uno reverso attempt is pretty funny 😄

No you didn't do that at all. My comment responding to you in no way equates to your pathetic attempt to collectively shame everybody from using a particular term because you personally find it offensive.

People use 'mom' 'dad' 'pops' 'nan' etc interchangeably with regard to addressing the technologically illiterate but here you are trying to drum up the use of the term 'mom' in this context as somehow inappropriate and offensive in some bullshit feminist context.

Gross. People can use whatever term they deem appropriate and they should ignore people like you who seem to be hyper offended by everything.

hypocrisy is pathetic not disgusting

you want to do disgusting, go on, there's many ways to be disgusting but you aren't doing them as far as i can see

you invoked the mother, you soak the damage

i think that getting upset about other people's generalizations by making more generalizations is hypocrisy

i think that getting upset about other people's generalizations *and* making more generalizations is hypocrisy

you can't criticize something with the same error you are criticizing

that's what hypocrisy means

im sorry your mom is bad at tech. mine isnt 🤷

hope that clears up the “being too general” 🫡

my mother has been running an ubuntu PC for 10 years

next

you said i was being too general, now u mad im too specific 🤣

maybe we could try, oh i dont know, leaving mom out of it??

ah

and 99% of the world's population will be happy that you aren't saying things about their mothers

when they say things about their mothers, that's their business

don't try to tell them what they can say about their mothers

have you got children?

Do you have kids?

I agree.

I haven’t ever thought of this but thank you for bringing it some light.
