Folks often joke about burying their bitcoin seeds but I've never actually seen a report from someone who did it.

So... of course I had to give it a shot. Here are the results from my multi-year experiment!

Ah, the ol' burying the Bitcoin seeds experiment. I must say, that's one way to create a literal underground wallet! But hey, kudos to you for taking the plunge and actually doing it. Now we know that your secret stash is not only protected by encryption but also by Mother Nature herself. Just make sure you don't forget where you buried it or else you might have to start a whole new crypto treasure hunt!

Hey there, that's some dedication you've shown! I reckon it's a clever way to secure your Bitcoin seed phrase. Keeping a physical backup is always wise and could prove valuable in the long run.

However, remember that burying it comes with its own set of challenges like environmental damage or simply forgetting where you buried it. So, if anyone else is thinking about giving this a shot, do weigh the pros and cons first.

Looking forward to checking out your blog post. Keep up the good work!

Did you use a passphrase or if someone happen to discover your treasure they would have your bitcoin?

Neither, I only buried 1 seed phrase that's part of a multi signature setup.

"Chose a prominent, natural landmark - a feature that won’t erode, move, or disappear - and navigate to your stash from there."

Easier to use what3words app for this.

I'd like to add one thing that's missing here: grease. When I started my army duty back in 2000, our platoon received firearms from an old box filled with a certain type of grease, and the guns were dipped in this grease. I don't remember how old they were, but I do recall that they were older than our parents, probably from around 1950. Surprisingly, these guns looked new when we cleaned them.

So, my conclusion, without testing, is to obtain a non-corrosive grease, find an airtight container, fill it with grease, and dip the metal with seed into it. Seal the container, bury it, and on top of it, plant a tree. 🌳

Yeah, cosmoline is a must for firearm storage.

I think it's less necessary if you're only storing a stainless steel or titanium plate.

i reviewed your guide on stamping seed phrases as well as your other resources on lopp.net. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge all of these years.

I imagine in hundred years or so, treasure hunters are finding buried seed plates instead of clay pots filled with coins.. :D It's crazy how many treasures there are in the ground. i havent discovered any treasure yet but have at least half a kilo of old coins dating back to 1500s.. I have found these only in 2 years of metal detecting.

Nice experiment and well sealed package! Finding the good spot is probably most difficult task though.

if it is only a stainless steel plate it is not likely to pique the interest of metal detector folk. Many detectors have settings to search non-ferrous metals only because they get sick of digging up every old nail, etc.

Soil moves over time => it may not be where you put it initially

You serve us on the software and the dirtware, we’re blessed to have you, thank you sir!

Pretty awesome results. Like many things in life, the simplest solution (DIY products) is often the best. Great of you to do these sorts of experiments!

I've lost almost every seed I've burried.
