On this day in 1947, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was formed by US President Harry Truman, primarily as the secret intelligence arm of US domestic and foreign anti-communist warfare. The CIA rapidly developed into one of the biggest threats to democracy and human rights, sponsoring coups and right-wing dictatorships in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. In the words of the former CIA director Mike Pompeo, "We lied, we cheated, we stole."
