What's everyone recommend for a self-hosted personal cloud server these days?

I am currently running my old nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct node for this purpose, after uninstalling all the Bitcoin related services, but it's less than ideal since it is very limited running on a R-Pi 4 with only 4G of RAM. My nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll is now my dedicated Bitcoin node and I would prefer to keep it dedicated to Bitcoin related services only.

So, I am looking for something separate to run NextCloud, Plex, Immich, and such, with the ability to access services via Tailscale, Tor, or clearnet on a per service basis, and maybe move my Haven relay over to that device, too. Should I just build a beefier rig running Umbrel OS, or would something else be better? Should I just wait until Start9 releases their next version with more options for remote connection and set up a separate Start9 server for this use-case, even though no one has any idea when that will be and I've been waiting over a year already? Is there another OS I should consider instead?

What hardware should I be looking at for this use-case? A Nuc or some other mini-pc? Looking to keep this around $500-$1,000.

Just get another minipc

How about nostr:npub1ltt9gry09lf2z6396rvzmk2a8wkh3yx5xhgkjzzg5znh62yr53rs0hk97y

Haven't looked into Parmanode. Does it have a good variety of services available outside of Bitcoin services, similar to Umbrel?

Can’t say, but Parman might help you with that.

Parma-mempool

😂

That's great. Remember, this personal server is not going to be used for Bitcoin stuff, though. That's what I already have my Start9 set up for.

I agree with nostr:nprofile1qyfhwumn8ghj7mmxve3ksctfdch8qatz9uq3xamnwvaz7tmsw4e8qmr9wpskwtn9wvhsqgqk7xspqr2vllaucs3sarswg2gvckzfcxkuvntx2076qlqrrvg8fva8ysrt , I use a refurbed ThinkCentre (with two new 16 GB RAM sticks and a new SSD) for nostr:nprofile1qyt8wue69uhh2mtzwfjkctnvda3kzmp6xsurgwqpzpmhxw309a6k6cnjv4kr5dpcxsuqqg829c7gzngg5du03fdcltkt9zzdqkz4jaw9ef94cf0z6munv2r0zsg8cnv5 as my home server separate from nostr:nprofile1q9z8wue69uhnvmr9dp58jernwf6xsct8d45hxdn4w5m8gatrdej8v7nhxa3h2cnsw94ksanc09unw6n0d9hkxdp4d44hxu35v4skgtn0de5k7m30qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uqzq44xkafh8j8hhy79809wsmv0lw46nu4pkwqjyp20ekml80mytde8phfu08 . At some point I will go further to create a RAID system for redundancies and such. I am still pretty new to self-hosting, so as I get more time to research, learn, and experiment, things will get better. For the last year or so, however, this setup as worked great.

I think this is the route I will go. Thank you!

Hey nostr:nprofile1qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq3zamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wwa5kuef0qqs9xk5wkcrrad9pq6ysn5jszfn3m4wr050lsptp8p9htjf9l4x50msg3f988 the new ThinkCentre has arrived, would love to pick your brain about the steps to migrate my Umbrel over to it. Can I DM you? Also, can you receive giftwrapped DMs, or do I need to use old and busted NIP-04 DMs?

Feel free, sir. Gift wrapped works just fine. To be totally transparent, though, I've used the Umbrel guide to migrate and it worked as advertised.

Is that somewhere on their community forums?

That's a good question. Last time I did it, it was to upgrade the OS. nostr:nprofile1qqsw5t3us9xs3gmclzjm37hvk2yy6pv9t96utjjttsj794hexc5x79qpzdmhxue69uhhwmm59e6hg7r09ehkuef092q0zz, any input or guides here?

I can't even find where to get the OS to install it on their site anymore.

In the settings there is a migration assistant. That seems like the way to go based on context.

I bought the Umbrel Home from their website specifically for this reason (and because I wanted to upgrade from Raspi 4 by doing a migration instead of a new build)

Based on the conversation above, I'll be installing Umbrel on a refurbished Think Centre that I picked up for $100 less than the Umbrel Home with similar specs for the CPU and RAM. I have a 5TB HDD that I'll be bringing over to the new machine, too.

Don't install umbrel. Just install all your apps from the source

Go with a linux distro, you think?

Ubuntu is fine

Honestly windows is okay for Plex. Containers are a little trickier on windows because of wsl.

I'd rather go with Ubuntu or Mint. Running mint on my main PC, so I am getting pretty familiar with it already.

However, what I have appreciated about Umbrel is the web interface that I can easily access from my PC without having to go plug a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Is that available with other Linux distros? You'd think it might be, since Umbrel is just Linux under the hood.

Get a mini-pc like for a example a thinkcentre. Advantage: You could in the future upgrade the hardware if needed. And it doesnt need as much space as a real pc or server rack.

If you arn't expirienced with linux get a easy distro like linuxmint or fedora. Otherwise a ubuntu server will do the job. Proxmox is also a popular sulution.

Esiest would be to install and use docker. Since all umbrel apps are in containers allready you can use them with no issues. You then could easily add your own dockers of your choice.
