The cost of your soul. I went over there young and naive. Took me 5 years of paying taxes into a government that wants to wipe my country off the earth (and more importantly learning the language) to realize all of the horrible things going on.
After reading about the Uyghur genocide I couldn’t ethically live there any longer. Packed my bags and left (a great life) a few months later.
The USA has some problems but I returned with a newfound appreciation of how lucky I am.
