Karo syrup was a common ingredient for fake blood in the 80's. Add some red food dye (maybe a bit of blue too), and some corn starch for opacity, and you're off to a good start.

Bunch’s syrup based recipes of different viscosities and hue for different effects. Especially fun are the blood and brain ones for use in homemade splatter guns for headshot to wall effects! Gonna be a fun couple of days.
