Having said that, what's quoted on github as the latest version and what you get from a "git pull" aren't the same.

Fair enough, I just quickly looked at the latest release. AUR also has "gossip-git" which should also pull the latest sources, I always ignore the version number on AUR for *-git packages. Regardless, it's not a good client for a mobile form factor. I'll probably try it on desktop.
