I'm sitting at a cafe that's directly across the river from a Chinese version of Las Vegas built in Northwest Laos. The city has it's own airport, but it's not near anything else in Laos.

This place is apparently one of several Chinese gambling hubs built just across the border from Thailand. The Chinese government cracked down on them a few years back and they turned into crime hubs for human trafficking and God knows what else. Many of the casinos were transformed into call centers where kidnapped people would be forced to scam people in their home countries.

This video has a great summary

Sounds frightening…

Been meaning to visit these places. Pretty crazy how the entire system is set up. I suppose Chinese nationals are really capitalising on neighbouring countries

Wow, that’s nuts they estimate 200,000 people are currently being held hostage and being used to scam people. Crazy! Don’t be meeting anyone about a job offer.

Time to take a ferry

Americans are the only nationals that can't go in apparently. I don't think I'm missing anything essential

It is so easy to pretend slavery ended cos America "abolished" it. But it is still a huge source of revenue in America, and maybe even more so around the world. I have seen numerous docu's about slavery in China in particular. I will watch this one, too. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah abolition is a long spectrum process. The civil war was just one step on that road.

America never really ended slavery. It’s just been outsourced to private prisons.
