So I have a free protonmail account with username@protonmail.com – according to legend I should be able to use the shorter domain username@proton.me (not pm.me) as well.... How do I enable that? I can't get it to work

I think you had to claim in time to get it for free when they rolled out this domain
All settings, Identity and addresses => My addresses ... maybe that place?

Thats where I did it but I have a paid account.
settings > identity and address > scroll down until you see the option to enable. also this might be paid feature
i have a free account and have @pm.me
not sure where the option to enable it is though

If you joined Proton before June 2022, you could get a free @proton.me address (alicejones@proton.me) for a limited time in addition to the original @protonmail.com (or @protonmail.ch) address you signed up with.
This option is no longer available, but you can get a @proton.me address by upgrading to Proton Plus.
