To be fair I've been running one of them almost a year, and haven't really had any problems. An occasional channel close, which luckily hasn't been that bad, and I've seny thousands and thousands of small zaps and bought a few things from some of the fine npubs selling their products here all with lightning.

It might not be perfect but it's completely changed how I use the network, and the further I've pushed myself into self hosting all that backend the more I understand what's going on and the more I like it.

It's not for everyone sure, but it's been a worthwhile, somewhat challenging for my tech limitations, and fun little challenge for myself to tackle.

Totally agree that running one’s own node completely changes how you interact with the wider network as a whole. Massive increase to self-sovereignty and overall utility, in spite of the mentioned downsides.
