I like to tell this story when I talk about the Nostr Plebs humble beginnings and how my eyes were opened with where Bitcoin is at when it comes to Lightning adoption.

The amount of Bitcoiners that message me asking how to pay the Lightning invoice to register their Nostr address, that they never used lightning before, that they had a Lightning node, but never opened up any channels, or that they had channels opened, but never made a transaction, or that they were unfamiliar with Lightning completely. I was shocked. How could Bitcoiners not know about or even use Lightning? 👀

Lightning has a bit of a marketing problem or maybe it has an adoption problem or a combination of both. 🤯

When it comes to managing your Lightning, node, liquidity management and channel management is hard. It's not fun. It's kind of a pain in the ass. I believe this will get better over time. It's already gotten better in the two and a half years that I've been running a Lightning node. 🤝

Custodial solutions are getting much easier as well. While many people may not be fans of custodial solutions, it's a misconception to believe that every person in the world will do this on their own. Do you maintain every single aspect of your house? Your car? Your electronics? No. Service providers exist for dozens of industries. Bitcoin will be no different. Stop custody shaming.

Is Lightning adoption where I wish it was at? Nope. However, we're working on it here. We're making Lightning fun and easy to use with zaps. We're making Lightning easy and frictionless.

I also truly believe that the Bitcoin communities around the world will push Lightning adoption. From Africa to Latin America to Southeast Asia, Lightning transactions are how they use Bitcoin. They don't use on-chain.

Keep building. Keep educating. It's a slow process, but we're on the right path.

Truly well spoken Derek mate honest to God well spoken 👏👏

Lightning has a UI UX problem. You've gotta be very very technically inclined to set up your on stuff and development is all over the place. We need more apps that look and feel as good as nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 to onboard new users.

The best UI and UX by far is Wallet of Satoshi. Zeus is getting better and I use it daily, but some of the text fields look like crap and cut off my text.

Agree that not everyone in the world will run their own lightning node..!

WOS is custodial and Zeus is non custodial.. Current Wallet is a Nostr home grown lightning wallet that now supports Wallet connect..!

Wow,

Any chance you could publish this wallet with basic docs on how to run and support it?🙏😁

eh; I prefer Muun over WoS, tbh

it’s cleaner, but also I get a little lost in the icon overload when sending/receiving

Isn't WoS custodial only though? idk I've never used it.

Yep nodes are a labor of love at this point but as time marches on we all need one. Nodes in phones coming. Blixt on the right path???

Blixt, Phoenix, LDK, etc are great solutions for sure.

I think it's a combo of marketing issues and usability when running a node as you said.

I think the majority of users (even bitcoiners) will likely end up using "light nodes" so everything is on their phones but still non-custodial.

I use Phoenix myself and love it, and have high hopes for Mutiny Wallet taking it to the next level.

Agreed. As nostr:npub15u3cqhx6vuj3rywg0ph5mfv009lxja6cyvqn2jagaydukq6zmjwqex05rqlikes to say 'You Gotta Meet People Where They're At'

The issue with many (not all) Bitcoiners is the HODL only culture that’s dominated for the past… decade(?).

The idea of spending a single satoshi is sacrilegious because “Bitcoin is for saving only.”

Nothing with that, however, lack of real world on the ground use retards individual growth of being able to use bitcoin.

Using Bitcoin, not for everything but here and there, helps the user understand what’s going on under the hood.

IMO, the time to change the narrative from hodl to usage begins now. It’ll take a while.

@SPENDandREPLACE

I stack, I spend, I use bitcoin most days zapping , spending & re stacking

I saw the HODL meme 15 minutes after it was initialy typed on the bitcointalk forum and still I have no idea when it did transform into "you can not buy dollars with bitcoin, ever".

Sure you can. HODL means you don't actively trade, like selling hoping to get lower lows, that's all. Class of 2021 with 1% of their money in bitcoin for some reason started misrepresenting it as "never selling", but most people with 99% in know it's not even theoretically possible if you are not planning on a hungry death.

In my eyes, if management of a node is kind of hard it sorts of act as a proof of human work. I don’t fully understand the dance (especially what can be done by the operator to try to maintain balance on the channels, except rebalancing with onchain transactions) but I appreciate that there is work involved. Doesn’t feel like a PoS, leave, forget and “earn” scenario.

I don't mind the PoW aspects either, but if we want more self custody of Lightning sats then we need it to become easier, otherwise I don't want to hear any custody shaming going on.

I’m really new to LN. I’m trying to understand if a scenario where I open channels with local LN payment specialists would be beneficial, to me as user and for the network.

Direct channels to shop allow for budgeting, on chain transaction would be like recharging a loyalty debit card. The flow is unidirectional.

With a payment specialist, would my incoming transactions (payments for my services) help balance the channel, provided the payment specialist does his job well and connects well locally and internationally?

Agree 👏👏👏

I tried to do lightning channels in the era of zerofeerouting and just couldn't keep up. I didn't have enough liquidity to keep channels balanced, everything drained one way or the other daily, so I had to set it aside until I learned more (or could provide higher liquidity). Was sad because I really wanted to support the network, even sign up some local businesses, just didn't have the (time) bandwidth. Willing to learn / restart though.

Honestly, I don't even do channel management anymore. I use lightning terminal to automatically manage the fees for me and I just let it flow how it needs to flow. I have 30 some channels opened. I just let it do its thing. No more headache for me.

That’s the point of lightning, just open more channels and let them be. No need to be obsessively rebalancing, loop in and loop out.

Agree. Running your own lightning node it's not easy, maybe things like greenlight will make it easier but I think most people will use in a way like Phoenix wallet, where you are using a node from a provider but you keep control of your funds with keys, but that doesn't solve everything bc these providers may block your tx or just take high fees for the service, so we still need easy non custodial solutions.
