Psychology of Trolls

I am aware of two main category of trolls. The first do it 'for the lulz.' It's cheap entertainment. The only option is ignore them until they go away. Don't engage them. It just provides them more 'lulz.' The more you react, them more you risk becoming a 'lulcow' that can be easily milked for 'lulz.'

The second category is people who are frustrated or angry and just need to vent. They have decided that you are part of their problem or that you're the person to harass about it. Nothing you say to them will change their minds. You can say something like 'I understand and disagree' if you want to be nice, but it's probably a waste of time.

There are many other types of trolls, including the mentally ill. They are less common, but they're out there. I guess you might be able to help some of them in some way, but who has time for that? Most of the time, it's best to ignore them, too.
