Sometimes, when I notice I have persistent trolls over months, I take a couple tries to reach out and talk to them.

I try to directly address their issues, and ask what their problem is, or who hurt them.

Like someone who is clearly a human but posts anti-Bitcoin stuff on my threads 193 times. Or who makes fun of my voice 65 times.

Thus far, it has almost never worked out. They just keep going until they burn out. Their views and comments tend to be near-zero anyway. It’s a mental illness issue. And I’m not equipped to handle it.

Kind of like how people throw poop in certain cities, there are people who digitally just parasitically can’t stop clutching to others negatively.

I invite them to do better, hope they recover, but I increasingly learn that dealing with them rationally doesn’t work and I’m not the right one to help with that sort of mental illness.

Its nice that you show sympathy and kindness 💛

You are great, I do wish for more attention on positive interactions and limited acknowledgement of negative.

Kind soul detected

Define boundaries and limits just as you would in person.

You’re a national treasure Lyn Alden.

Yep not worth the energy. Just do good deeds and ignore the rest. You can’t please everyone.

PV 🤙 well said, energy is an interesting thing and there those who take more than is given

Many others really value your takes and analysis 💪🏻

I've concluded that dealing with people like this in my physical vicinity is usually worthwhile. Face to face conversations are energetically different.

When it comes to phone world I just block and move on. If they are that dedicated to wasting their time spreading negativity that's a personal choice.

I can't help them.

Love your work and your words are way too important to waste addressing such an issue—Even if it’s only 200 or so.

Thank you! 🍻

Listening to the audio version on Audible as I drive a semi. Some info is new to me, others are not, but still an interesting story. About 7”6-7 hours left to listen to… Well done!

It’s generous of you to show empathy. It’s tough to be in a spot where unwell individuals relentlessly target you online.

I often think about the amazing things those kinds of people could achieve if they channeled their energy into something positive instead of fixating on someone in a harmful way.

I just end up feeling bad for them😆

Forgive them

I do.

you say "almost never worked out", would love to hear about cases that did

Some people fell for obvious impersonator scams, and keep harassing me as a supposed scammer who stole their money, and then when I realize that detail, I explain with evidence it wasn't me and highlight the clear fake account that they're referencing, and they actually realize it and stop. (If someone isn't well-off, doesn't have a good information filter, and looses a few thousand dollars from a scam that they think is me, it's natural that they'd devote a lot of time to harass me. So if I see that start to happen over time, I take time to examine it and clarify it, with half-decent results.)

Some other pure trolls soften *slightly* when faced with a human-to-human response, but still have a persistently negative issue. Instead of 10/10 of their comments being negative, 9/10 of their comments become negative and the other 1/10 become semi-consecutive. There are more that double-down than soften, though. And then over time they burn out, because their comments get no likes anyway.

The statistics aren't great.

Yeah, my own experience is that if people have wrong information (someone claimed that I claimed something) - you can fix it with the right information.

The real problem with persistent trolls is that there is always conscious / unconscious agenda... luckily I have time, so if I believe person is worthy, I still try to figure it out with them what they want. And if it is really to just see me in misery for some odd reason (they believe I deserve it or I've somehow "hurt them"), hey, sometimes I can oblige so they can be happy.

But in the long run - really hard to keep observing the success of someone that you hate.

So sad..

Take care Lyn !

There seems to be a disproportionately large number of them in the bitcoin space unfortunately.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother being online. Life is more…real and meaningful offline, and these idiot/cowards rarely show up (if ever)

One of my approaches with them is to highlight that I’d treat them in real life like I do with them online, but they likely wouldn’t. I do my best to translate my real-world social cues into online spaces.

They tend to just double down into digital antagonism and negativity.

After many years in this space, nobody has ever said anything really mean to my face. That requires effort.

They really are cowards

Last time I did that was today on LinkedIn 😅 but it is hopeless

You have far more patience than I Lyn.

Myriad people with personality disorders on social media, unfortunately.

LFG - Lyn is fuckin great

Many cases of parasocial relationships

Sending posi troll vibes

Time is precious, the older you get the more you redirect your attention where it can be effective

People have some very limiting beliefs & carry a lot of pain.

Their chosen path & unlearned lessons are none of your business.

Mute & move on.

Speaking of your voice, I'm glad you read your own audio book. It made it far more authentic. Your work work is fantastic and your personal life and struggles or lack there of should not affect people's level of respect for you.

Here is a new Legendary Meme made just for you.

During my decades online I have dealt with countless trolls by the hundreds. Each one has their own back story and reasons for trolling people. From being immature little shits who never grew up. Secretly having romantic feelings for you and not being able to tell you. To just having such a shitty life that the only thing that brings them solace is to watch the innocent who made the mistake of annoying them. Feel the pain that they deal with every day of their lives.

One of the greatest tools that any person can have against a troll is to learn how to not react. That no matter how hard they persist and continue. Eventually the animals will get bored playing with you and move on.

While on the surface this may seem like the cowards way out. In reality it is the stoic way into their heart, mind, and soul. Many trolls can not be saved, but some will save themselves. This only comes with the realization that their trolling is futile when they encounter someone with such immense strength of will and character. That they realize that no matter what they do. You will not give into their relentless attempts to achieve their desired negative reactions from you.

You can't save everyone, but in the land of freedom of speech for a person with a kind heart and soul like you. Utilizing the wisdom in this meme is what will be your best defense against even the strongest most persistent trolls on the internet.

If you ever need backup. Mention me in a conversation that you are being trolled in. I have the legendary wisdom and life experiences to fight trolls and win. I am always here to help.

GN

Your work is awesome Lyn!. I was wondering why bitcoin and bitcoiners trigger such a hate in some people. Why don’t they just ignore it and go on with their game. I have no answer yet.

I think people are making things more complicated than necessary. Just mute and move on. As a middle-aged retiree, I don’t have a platform or social media audience like you do, but I’ve experienced my share of mentally ill individuals, whether they be drug addicted bums on the streets of San Diego, leftists on Reddit, or participants in Telegram groups for projects I’m working on. And seriously, “mute and ignore” is the only way to preserve your sanity.

My girlfriend who has 300k followers on Instagram (fashion influencer) practices the “mute and ignore” strategy on a daily basis and it’s been highly effective. Don’t waste your precious time and energy trying to reason with hostile retards!

Loved your book.📕

Ding ding 🛎️! You said retard!! lol I find it hilarious that this word has made a comeback!

Hi! It worked! Thank you

I love your voice

Not worth your time or energy. Just embrace the love and constructive dialogue. We all win.

I’ll be referring to trolls as poop slingers from now on

Lyn, I applaud you for trying. You could just ignore them and move on with your life but you don’t. One day you might have a positive outcome and make them a better person. Keep trying.

I hope its okay to say but i’ve always found your voice very calming/even and easy to focus on when listening to you explain complex topics.

Psychology of Trolls

I am aware of two main category of trolls. The first do it 'for the lulz.' It's cheap entertainment. The only option is ignore them until they go away. Don't engage them. It just provides them more 'lulz.' The more you react, them more you risk becoming a 'lulcow' that can be easily milked for 'lulz.'

The second category is people who are frustrated or angry and just need to vent. They have decided that you are part of their problem or that you're the person to harass about it. Nothing you say to them will change their minds. You can say something like 'I understand and disagree' if you want to be nice, but it's probably a waste of time.

There are many other types of trolls, including the mentally ill. They are less common, but they're out there. I guess you might be able to help some of them in some way, but who has time for that? Most of the time, it's best to ignore them, too.

I wouldn't rule out something more malicious. The Pentagon has 30,000 contractors employed to steer online conversations.... 🤨

Speaking words of wisdom...let it be 💗

Some people are lame and have nothing better to do. Not sure what they get out if it

remove yourself from the equation

many people spend all their energy fixated on others in avoidance of ever looking at themselves

you have a lot of exposure to the public and therefore have a high chance of being preyed upon by these individuals

trying to work things out with them is noble and courageous

but unless healing the core wounds of all those that got triggered by you is your ultimate intention for the use of your energy

i would practice disconnecting yourself from the person they think they're talking to

The problem when you are brilliant is that some will complain they are dazzled.

Never stop! Love your work and book!

😉❤️💪💪💪💪

I’m happy to say that I have a persistent troll on Twitter, among many, and while my account was compromised he didn’t realize it and posted on his main feed that I deleted stuff (which was false).

When I was restored, among other things I touched base with that troll and was like, btw I didn’t delete anything, with evidence.

And he did indeed tweet and confirm his misunderstanding.

So he’s one of my favorite trolls now. I love honest critics. He doesn’t like bitcoin, but he’s a real human being online.

I thanked him and went through his profile to find something I could retweet. Bless your enemies, they say.

Truth. I have a similar experience with the normie work I do. I used to take not being able to get through to them personally but come to understand it’s way outside of my expertise

Trolls 🧌 are a bit like stalkers … on one side they’re annoying and creepy …. But on the other side they’re a sign you’ve made it.

Speaking of which I wonder where the word “troll” came from anyone know (ex Scandi supernatural creatures)???
