how long ago was that? actually curious what it used to be like, as people seem to be reminiscent of the ‘good times’ there
April/may… def before 100k
I worry a bit about similar things happening here culturally if this place were to pick up the pace of mass adoption
I dunno if it can be saved. I hope
I’m not betting on it, but I just want people to be happy and free
This is what real virtue looks like.
the algo is a double edge sword, and we still don’t have that, yet
we’re more mute culture here
if people start going off on people, people just mute, some leave, and it’s ok to take a break from social media
we’re learning as we go too, just have a different build approach
Do you think not having what’s hot as a default feed would help save it? I keep saying they at least need better onboarding that tells people there are more custom feeds - so many reject What’s Hot and remove it but so many others don’t even know that they can
I don’t know, but I know the J curve is real and I have to remind myself of that sometimes
not having a team of devs and leadership to yell at is a good start tho
private invite only beta was curated and created a culture that wasn’t ready to deal with the baddies (are_we_the_baddies.jpg) when they showed up.
the place goes kill circle and I want to speak with the manager real fucking fast
but that can’t scale
I feel there’s a lot of confusion from the users and also maybe among the team regarding like.. the differences in goals between bluesky and atproto
Branding as a twitter alternative created a community that doesn’t understand or want to understand decentralization, federation, etc
there’s a big gap in understanding there
Like I’ve said over there before, I don’t really know what the right answers are, I just know when something feels wrong
Moderation can protect but it can and does suppress
The perfect platform doesn’t exist and I’m not sure it ever will
does it show total users and also active users somewhere?
what do you think was the catalyst of it pivoting like that 🤔
Two major twitter crashes have really pushed a lot of twitter traffic to bsky
Lack of communication from devs over community issues & the goals of the project led to negative sentiment of bsky on twitter which pushed over a lot of trolls who would take advantage of the situation
It changed pretty suddenly from a warm friendly community to people turning on each other and constant context collapse, especially with new twitter folks coming in and seeing discourse they don’t have full context for and then dogpiling or just using any shitty chance to get their voices heard
We’ve been doing a lot of blocking & muting & using mutelists but the harassment is just coming from every direction from endless accounts lately and it feels impossible to escape
^ some stats
I always like looking at this atlas too, it’s updated weekly, it says 68k users in the graph so I assume that’s about how many were active the past week (?)
I think pne of the fundamental difference is who is in charge of the moderation.
As bluesky (and any centralized platform) scales, more people show up with a wider and wider spectrum of tolerance. Because of this, more rules have to be made to satisfy the easily offended etc. You play to the lowest common denominator since you can only cast a single net that applies to all. But this eventually results in so many restrictions that most users will feel boxed in. This breeds resentment and toxicity.
Nostr sidesteps all of this. You alone are in charge of the moderation and your moderation decisions affect you and only you. The most sensitive and easily offended person can moderate their feed to the Nth degree while still allowing the most bigoted person in the world to shout their racism into the void. All parties get what they want. This breeds contentment and happiness.
I’m excited to learn more about what tools this place offers :)
It’ll never happen here. There may be relays that go that way, but there will always be uncensored ones.
Define hate if you would.
This. It went from a beacon of light to the pits of hell in one flash. 😔
