Let's normalize Tor integration on Nostr.
Discussion
Yes, but at the same time, Tor kinda sucks from a UX perspective. Slow and unreliable.
Some circuits are slow. Ctrl-shift-L to build a new circuit, in the Browser Bundle. "signal newnym" from the command line.
What annoys me more is the number of script-kiddie crooks setting up exit nodes in places that don't GAF, and trying to Peek'n'splice HTTPS connections to corporate websites. Certificate errors are the only result, but its a nuisance, and can disrupt automated updates.
Normalise Tor Hidden Services for everything. Then we wont need exit nodes.
Agreed. Running services within Tor makes sense.
Isn't Tor centralized and controlled by the NSA or something?
Ask Snowden ;)
It's rumored
Good point ! 🤔😬
They don't seem interested in banning it, so probably.
what else we've got?
I think the idea is to normalize anonymized access to Nostr, not Tor specifically.
Pls be joking
Many CCP’s honeypots are confirmed.
Ew no. Let's normalize reverse proxies and VPN tunneling instead.
what are those in laymans terms and how would you set those up?
This is the problem. We do not have anything that a layman can use. Everything requires significant buy in from the user. Why isn't this commercialised yet? We need service providers that abstract all the complexity away for some fees. nostr:npub1494rtg3ygq4cqawymgs0q3mcj6hucvu4kmadv03s5ey2sg32df5shtzmp0 why not lead the way? :)
Yes, you can use Orbot to integrate #Amethyst and #Tor 🧅
No.
I'd rather not. It's becoming less effective and that's not gong to bode well for future privacy online.
I'd rather not waste the effort to build in a tired tech and move to more future-proof tech.

🤷♂️
Seems like a waste of effort to standardize to something that's becoming less effective.
But it isn't like I can stop you or have a better suggestion. 😅
What makes you say it's becoming less effective?
Less and less endpoints, cloudflare blocking nodes.
And owning all the ones they aren't blocking.
And people say "but the US government isn't blocking Tor!". Feds'd need a bunch of new lies to get around the First Amendment if they openly banned it, plus then various agencies wouldn't be able to use it themselves.
Tor still has more exit nodes than any commercial VPN. Its just that half of them are run by script kiddies trying to downgrade your HTTPS and/or fake certificates, poorly. Ctrl-shift-L fixes this, but its a pain.
Tor Hidden Services fix this better, because then the circuit doesn't need an exit.
Some Nostr relays offer Hidden Services already! All should.
I really should look at tor more...
we need some good billionaires to fund some non-profits with the mission to add thousands of relays, nodes, onion sites, exits, miners, pools, community meshes, for tor, bitcoin, and nostr, among others, something like that
That makes them failure points; not truly distributed.
Plebs need to do it.
I2p?
🎯
Developers, please support #Tails (tails.net) when possible. AppImages are clickable once execute permissions are set, and deb files can be installed per boot with sudo dpkg -i for-example-sparrow-wallet.deb
It's crazy to me that in 2024 we have clients without proxy settings.
Western BTC relay is available over Tor.
run your own nostr stuff folks
not as simple as running your own Bitcoin Node or Lightning Node.
simple check relay of others to see active 🔀 🧅
💯
I approve this message
Is ator a different tor network ?
