Reminds me of an earlier time installing BBS's in unsecured bank mainframes back in the 70's and 80's.

That's where we met the famous "Mendax" (Julian Assange)

If I remember, IRC didn't relay between servers but between clients. You had to join different servers to see different chat rooms, similar to discord today...

And of course you couldn't follow users etc...
