I just learned that schools now have Esports teams where kids compete against other schools playing video games. Why is this a thing? If I was a parent, I would oppose school resources and time being wasted on this, but I could be wrong and biased since I hate video games.

I like video games and I think this is a waste of resources. Kids should be playing with each other and outside as much as possible.
Unsuprisingly, it seemed to start happening at the same time professional league esports popped up. They've now got more eyeballs watching than the NFL does!
There's some major, major sponsor money behind this trend now. It's not going away.
It’s a shame because we know too much screen time can be harmful for development and wellbeing of kids.
